What AIMS South Africa Structured Master's Scholarship actually covers.
The African Institute for Mathematical Sciences runs a one-year structured master's programme at its South Africa centre in Muizenberg, just outside Cape Town, and funds admitted students in full. Two streams are offered: Mathematical Sciences, the institute's long-running flagship, and a newer AI for Science stream aimed at students who want to apply machine learning methods to research problems in the natural and physical sciences.
What sets the award apart is how complete it is. Beyond tuition and research fees, it covers return flights, airport transfers, medical insurance, a room on the residential campus, and all three meals a day at the AIMS canteen, alongside a modest monthly stipend of R2,200 for personal expenses. Students therefore arrive with essentially no out-of-pocket cost, which is deliberate: the programme is designed so that talented graduates from across the continent are not filtered out by their ability to fund a year abroad.
The teaching model is intensive and residential. Students live and study on the same campus, working through a sequence of short courses taught by visiting lecturers drawn from universities worldwide, before moving on to a supervised research essay. The cohort is deliberately pan-African and the environment is collaborative rather than competitive, with tutors resident on site.
Eligibility is broad within its constraints: African citizenship, African residency at the point of applying, and a completed four-year degree or a three-year degree topped by an honours year. The academic background does not have to be mathematics as such, but it does need to be quantitative enough that the coursework is tractable. Applicants who have previously held an AIMS scholarship at any centre cannot apply again.
Two intakes run each year. The January intake, whose applications are open between August and October of the preceding year, is restricted to South African applicants. The September intake, open continent-wide, takes applications between January and March. Prospective students should confirm the exact closing date on the application portal, as AIMS publishes the window by month rather than by a fixed calendar date.
