The University of Edinburgh's Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program is accepting applications for 2027/2028 across both on-campus master's degrees and online postgraduate diplomas, with a distinctive climate focus that separates it from sister programmes elsewhere in the network. Applicants are asked to demonstrate experience, or at minimum a serious ambition, in addressing the climate crisis, and the eligible programme list reflects that: climate change management and finance, food security, planetary health, sustainable energy systems, environmental sustainability and biodiversity all feature alongside broader development and data subjects.
The online postgraduate diploma route deserves particular attention because it changes who can realistically apply. Scholars pursuing the online programmes are not required to relocate, and the eligibility rules are deliberately looser for that track: diploma applicants may already hold an undergraduate or master's degree from an African university, whereas master's applicants must not hold any prior postgraduate degree. For working professionals who cannot leave their post or their family for a year in Scotland, this is a genuine alternative rather than a consolation option.
Selection criteria go beyond academic performance. The programme asks for evidence of significant barriers to education and early career development, meaning applicants are assessed partly on what they have overcome rather than only on what they have achieved. A record of community leadership and service is also required. Citizenship and residency in an African country are mandatory, and refugee status in an African country qualifies.
The timeline is unusual and catches applicants out. There are two dates: an Applicant Declaration Form due on 19 October 2026, and the main application due on 19 November 2026. The declaration form is the gate; missing it forecloses the main application regardless of merit. The 19 November date is also when the undergraduate degree certificate and transcript must be complete, so final-year students should check their own institution's certification timeline before committing to the cycle.
