What CWAJ Graduate Scholarship for Non-Japanese Women 2027 actually covers.
The College Women's Association of Japan has run its Non-Japanese Graduate Scholarship since 1981, and in that time has supported women from more than fifty countries. It is one of the few well-established Japanese awards that a woman can pursue on her own merits rather than through a government quota, and African women in doctoral study in Japan are squarely within its remit.
For the 2027 cycle the award is worth 2,000,000 yen, covering one academic year. It is open to all disciplines with no restriction on age, which sets it apart from the many Japanese and international schemes that quietly favour applicants under thirty. Selection is decided on academic merit, the feasibility and quality of the proposed research, its potential societal impact, and the strength of supporting recommendations.
The eligibility condition that filters most applicants out is enrolment. This scholarship is for non-Japanese women already enrolled in a PhD programme at a Japanese university. It does not help you get into Japan; it helps you stay and finish. African women who have secured a doctoral place in Japan and are facing the funding gap that so often opens in the middle years of a PhD are precisely the audience.
Beyond the money, recipients are recognised as CWAJ Scholars and join a long-standing network of international women academics in Japan, a community that has proved durable for alumnae well past graduation.
Applying means first registering for an Application ID Number, then completing the online form and submitting a research proposal, transcripts, proof of doctoral enrolment and recommendation letters. The ID number must be quoted in all correspondence with the selection committee. The deadline is 5 October 2026 at 10:00 pm Japan Standard Time, and late submissions are not entertained.
