About this scholarship

What Honjo International Scholarship 2027 actually covers.

The Honjo International Scholarship Foundation runs one of the most competitive and most genuinely open graduate scholarships in Japan. Roughly ten scholars are selected each year from a global applicant pool, and African students are eligible on the same footing as everyone else.

The feature that sets Honjo apart is the application route. The great majority of Japanese scholarships require a university to nominate you, which effectively locks out anyone not already embedded in a Japanese institution. Honjo accepts direct applications through its own online system, from anywhere in the world, provided you have secured admission to a Japanese graduate school. For an African student holding an offer from a Japanese university but no funding, this is one of the few doors that is actually open.

The stipend is generous and scales inversely with programme length: 230,000 yen a month for one- and two-year programmes, 210,000 yen for three-year programmes, and 180,000 yen for anything longer. Payments run for the minimum period needed to complete the degree. All disciplines are supported, and the foundation explicitly names engineering, artificial intelligence, medicine and public health, economics and business, environmental sciences, law and international relations, humanities and social sciences, and arts and design.

Selection is a three-stage affair: document screening, then an interview on 9 February 2027 held in Tokyo or by video call, and final selection on 31 March 2027. The video call option means an applicant does not need to be in Japan, or fund a trip there, to reach the final round.

The application asks for a research plan on the foundation's template, transcripts, an admission letter, and a two-minute video presentation of your research, which is an unusual requirement worth preparing properly. The submission window runs from 1 September to 31 October 2026, closing at 10:00 pm Japan Standard Time.
