About this scholarship

What Margaret McNamara Education Grants — South Africa Program 2027 actually covers.

The Margaret McNamara Education Grants have supported women from developing countries since 1981, awarding USD 5.6 million to 639 grantees from 81 countries. The South Africa Program is the strand most directly relevant to African students: it funds women already studying at designated South African universities, which makes it useful both to South African nationals and to women from elsewhere on the continent who have moved to South Africa to study.

The eligibility profile is distinctive and worth reading closely. Applicants must be self-identifying women, must be at least 25 years old at the deadline, and must be nationals of a country on MMEG's published country eligibility list. That age floor is deliberate: MMEG targets women who are somewhat further into their lives and careers and whose education is likely to translate quickly into impact for women and children in their home countries. Enrolment must already be in place at the point of applying, either full-time or part-time with a minimum of two courses per semester, and candidates must still be enrolled for at least one semester after grants are awarded in December. A graduation plan within three years of the award is also required.

One practical caveat: MMEG does not publish the grant amount on its eligibility or application pages, and it asks applicants to calculate and express their estimated expenses in Rand. Candidates should treat the award as a contribution towards study costs rather than assume a full ride, and should confirm the current figure with MMEG directly.

The South Africa cycle runs from 15 May to 14 September, closing at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Standard Time, with successful applicants notified in December. The window is open now.
