The DrPH is a practice-oriented doctorate rather than a research PhD, and this scheme is designed around a specific theory of change: train senior public health practitioners at a leading Canadian school, then place them back into African health systems rather than losing them to the diaspora.
That intent is built into the programme structure. The final two years are spent in the scholar's home country, and applicants are assessed on the credibility of their commitment to return. It is not a soft preference stated in the marketing copy; it is one of five stated eligibility requirements alongside citizenship, residency, partner-institution graduation and academic standing.
Financial support is complete. Tuition, travel, housing, food, books and other expenses are covered for the full duration, and scholars are wrapped in an orientation programme and a support network intended to reduce the isolation that often affects international doctoral students. Because the DrPH runs over several years and includes an African placement phase, the travel component is more significant here than in a conventional single-campus award.
Eligibility is narrower than most pan-African schemes in one specific way: candidates must have graduated from an Africa Health Collaborative partner institution. Prospective applicants should confirm their alma mater's partner status before investing time in an application. Candidates must also not have begun doctoral study elsewhere.
