What Zhejiang University Chinese Government Scholarship for International Students actually covers.
Zhejiang University (ZJU), based in Hangzhou and consistently ranked as one of China's top five research universities, offers multiple scholarship tracks for international students from across the globe, including all African countries. As part of China's national push to attract the world's most talented graduate students, ZJU participates in both the Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC) scheme and the separate Zhejiang Provincial Government Scholarship, providing African applicants with two distinct competitive pathways to full or partial funding for undergraduate, master's, and doctoral studies.
Located in one of China's most technologically advanced cities — Hangzhou, home to global technology giants including Alibaba — Zhejiang University offers unparalleled connections to China's digital economy, innovation ecosystem, and entrepreneurial culture. This makes it a particularly attractive destination for African students in computer science, electrical engineering, artificial intelligence, data science, biotechnology, pharmaceutical sciences, and business — all fields where Africa faces significant talent gaps and where ZJU has particular global distinction.
The CSC Type-B scholarship, available through ZJU's online application portal, provides full tuition, on-campus accommodation or housing allowance, a monthly stipend of CNY 3,000–3,500, and comprehensive health insurance. The Zhejiang Provincial Government Scholarship covers full tuition and provides a registration fee waiver, though it does not include a monthly living allowance and is thus typically pursued as supplementary funding or by students with other income sources.
Application for ZJU's international scholarship is made directly through the university's online admissions system, where applicants select their preferred scholarship type. The application period generally opens in January and closes in March for September intake, though exact dates vary annually. Applicants from Africa are particularly encouraged to apply to science, technology, and engineering programmes.
