What Mitacs Globalink Research Award – International Students to Canada actually covers.
The Mitacs Globalink Research Award is a competitive Canadian government-funded mobility program that enables senior undergraduate students, graduate students, and postdoctoral researchers from international institutions — including African universities — to conduct research at Canadian universities for 12 to 48 weeks. Each award provides CAD 6,000 to support travel, accommodation, and living expenses during the research placement. Canada is one of the world's leading destinations for research, and for African students seeking to build international research networks and gain hands-on experience in Canadian labs and academic environments, this award is a uniquely accessible pathway. Mitacs partners with a wide network of Canadian host universities and professors, and applicants identify a willing supervisor before submitting their application. The award funds both directions of mobility — international scholars coming to Canada and Canadian students going abroad — but for African students, the inbound-to-Canada stream is the primary relevant pathway. Eligible applicants must be enrolled full-time at an eligible international institution, be a legal adult (18+), and must not conduct research in a country where they hold citizenship. The program is open to all countries except Russia and North Korea, which includes all 54 African nations. Disciplines covered span the full research spectrum from engineering, computing, and health sciences to social sciences, environmental studies, and arts. African students who are currently enrolled in research programs and who are keen to spend a formative research term at a leading Canadian institution are encouraged to explore supervisors actively seeking international collaborators.
