What QUT Postgraduate Research Award (QUTPRA) 2026 actually covers.
The QUT Postgraduate Research Award is Queensland University of Technology's flagship funding package for higher degree researchers, and it is one of the more substantial research scholarships available to African students heading to Australia. It is open across every discipline QUT supervises, which means applicants from engineering, health, the sciences, business, law, education and the creative industries all compete within the same annual round rather than for narrow field-specific pools.
What makes the award notable is that it bundles the three costs that usually sink a self-funded research degree. Doctoral candidates receive tuition sponsorship for as long as four years, MPhil candidates for two. On top of that sits an annual tax-free living stipend of AUD 37,010 paid fortnightly, which is pitched to cover accommodation and everyday costs in Brisbane. International recipients also receive single Overseas Student Health Cover, satisfying the health insurance condition attached to the Australian student visa.
Funding runs for 3.5 years for a PhD, with a possible six-month extension, and 1.75 years for an MPhil, with a possible three-month extension. The number of awards is not fixed and varies year to year.
The application route is worth understanding early, because it is two-stage rather than a single form. Candidates first submit an expression of interest and apply for admission to a QUT research degree; those judged eligible are then invited to lodge a scholarship application in the annual round. In practice this means securing a supervisor whose interests genuinely match your proposal is the decisive step, since supervisor and faculty endorsement carry real weight in the ranking. African applicants planning a research career would do well to make contact with a prospective supervisor well before the closing date of 31 July 2026.
