What Sapienza University Rome International Excellence Scholarship actually covers.
Sapienza University of Rome — the largest university in Europe by enrollment with over 100,000 students — offers a range of international scholarship and financial aid opportunities to academically gifted students from Africa and across the world who enrol in its bachelor's, master's, and PhD programmes. As Italy's and one of Europe's most historic universities (founded in 1303), Sapienza holds a leading position in QS global rankings and provides a world-class academic environment across virtually every discipline. International students, including those from African nations, are eligible for merit-based tuition fee waivers as well as regional grants administered through Lazio's right to education authority (DiSCo Lazio), which provides significant living cost support for eligible low-income students. For master's students specifically, the Sapienza International Post-Degree Scholarship provides €1,290 per month for 6 to 12 months for holders of a Sapienza master's degree who wish to extend research or work experience abroad — supporting knowledge circulation back to Africa. Additionally, Sapienza's tuition structure is income-based, meaning many students from African countries with limited household income pay very low or zero tuition fees, and merit waivers further reduce costs. The university offers over 59 fully English-taught programmes. Applications open each spring through the Sapienza Admissions portal, with a pre-selection process for visa-required applicants launching earlier in the year.
