What Institute of Science Tokyo (Science Tokyo / Tokyo Tech) MEXT University-Recommended Graduate Scholarship actually covers.
The Institute of Science Tokyo — formed by the merger of Tokyo Institute of Technology and Tokyo Medical and Dental University in October 2024 — is one of Japan's premier science and engineering universities, consistently ranked among the top institutions in Asia. Through its International Graduate Program (IGP-A), the university offers MEXT (Monbukagakusho) University-Recommended Scholarships to exceptional international applicants, including students from African countries, who wish to pursue master's or doctoral research in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, architecture, and life sciences.
The IGP-A programme allows students to complete full graduate degrees taught entirely in English, removing the language barrier that prevents many international candidates from accessing Japan's world-class research environment. Faculty supervisors at Science Tokyo are globally recognised for cutting-edge work in fields such as robotics, materials science, computer science, environmental engineering, and biomedical research. The MEXT university-recommended pathway, as offered through IGP-A, allows applicants to secure both admission and scholarship funding before arriving in Japan — providing significantly greater certainty than the embassy-recommendation pathway.
Scholarship recipients receive a monthly stipend of approximately ¥147,000 for master's students and ¥148,000 for doctoral students, with full tuition and enrollment fees waived by the university. Additionally, round-trip airfare from the student's home country is provided. The scholarship is renewable for the full duration of the programme, contingent on satisfactory academic progress.
African applicants with strong backgrounds in STEM fields are encouraged to identify potential supervisors at Science Tokyo prior to applying, as a direct communication with a faculty member significantly strengthens the application. The program is highly competitive globally, making early preparation and contact with prospective supervisors essential.
